About Dr. Samantha Mahr

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in New York City. I work with adults across the lifespan, helping patients navigate the complexities of relationships, identity, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. Many people come to therapy feeling stuck—repeating patterns in relationships, battling self-doubt, struggling with persistent feelings of anxiety, or the weight of depression. Perhaps you are navigating major life transitions, looking to heal from traumatic experiences, experiencing work-related stress or challenges related to your identity. My goal is to help you engage with yourself and others in a more meaningful, fulfilling and authentic way. In therapy, I will work with you to explore your history, internal experience and relationships with others, as well as provide you with the tools to more gratifyingly navigate your life.

What My Patients Say About Working With Me

I am deeply committed to providing a supportive, compassionate and effective therapy experience. Here is what patients have shared about working with me.

My Services

You are the expert in your own life. I view my role as offering insight and helping to connect you more deeply to yourself and the world around you.

My practice is based on a foundation of contemporary psychoanalytic approaches. I feel that analyzing the underlying causes of emotional distress leads to a greater sense of connection and vitality in your life. I find that flexibility is essential to effective treatment and I utilize other techniques when indicated.

  • I am an out-of-network provider; however, I can support you in navigating psychotherapy reimbursement with your insurance provider.

Many patients with out-of-network benefits are able to get reimbursed for a considerable portion of the cost of treatment. I also provide super bills to assist in a timely reimbursement.

If you would like to find out more about your out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy, I recommend that you call your insurance provider and ask the following questions:

    1. Does my plan include mental health benefits?

    2. Do I have an out-of-network deductible that has to be met first before I get reimbursed? Has any amount of my deductible been covered this year?

    3. What is my co-insurance amount?

    4. What is the usual and customary rate covered by my insurance for outpatient psychotherapy (CPT code 90834)?

  • The first step is to schedule a brief, complimentary consultation phone call. During this conversation, we will talk about your needs, answer any initial questions you have, and determine if working together feels like a good fit. From there, we will set up our first official session, where we can explore your concerns more deeply and outline a personalized path forward.

  • In your first session, we will discuss what brought you to therapy, explore your goals, and I will answer any questions you may have. It is a collaborative space to begin building trust, comfort, and clarity on how we will work together.

  • Absolutely— In addition to in person sessions, I offer secure and convenient virtual sessions via video call.

  • We will meet for a full 50 minutes.

  • While I customize treatment plans for each individual, I typically recommend weekly appointments to build consistency and momentum. At times, it may feel appropriate to meet twice a week. If you find yourself in a crisis, I offer emergency sessions upon request.

  • Life happens! I kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule or cancel to avoid cancellation fees.  You may contact me via phone or email to make any changes.
